Born April 4, 1965, in New York City, Robert Downey Jr. began acting as a young child. He made his first film appearances and was a cast member on Saturday Night Live in the 1980s, but his growing success was marred by years of struggles with drug abuse. Eventually turning his life around, he earned a resurgance of critical and popular acclaim, and is considered one of Hollywood's A-list actors.

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- Iron Man and his little Iron sidekick bonded while filming the latest Marvel movie.
Eleven-year-old Ty Simpkins, who plays Tony’s Starks’ young geek pal in “Iron Man 3,” stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Friday, where he revealed that he and Robert Downey Jr. became fast friends – after a little teasing from the star.
“When I was on the phone with him one time, I asked him, ‘What should I call you?’” Ty recounted to Billy Bush and Kit Hoover.
“And he said, ‘Master and Lord of the Universe.’ And then on the set I called him Robert, but then after the film was done, he said to call him Uncle Bob,” Ty said.
And it appears Robert lives a little like Tony Stark when it comes to entertaining. In addition to giving Ty gifts worth $500 after they finished the movie, the actor hosted a lunch that even The Incredible Hulk would balk at.
“I went over to his house one day for lunch and he ordered 50 pizzas, but I ate cheese because I’m a vegetarian,” Ty said with a laugh, about a meeting he had that included his mom, Robert’s wife Susan and the actor’s son Exton.
