Born April 4, 1965, in New York City, Robert Downey Jr. began acting as a young child. He made his first film appearances and was a cast member on Saturday Night Live in the 1980s, but his growing success was marred by years of struggles with drug abuse. Eventually turning his life around, he earned a resurgance of critical and popular acclaim, and is considered one of Hollywood's A-list actors.

Weekend Box Office Report: Duh, ‘Iron Man 3′ is Number 1

+ No comment yet

Do I even need to tell you what was number one at the box office this weekend?
It should come as no surprise that Robert Downey Jr, walked away with the top spot at the box office this weekend with Iron Man 3. The threequel opened on Friday with $68.3 million and held over extremely well on Saturday with another $62.2 million. Sunday dropped a bit to $44.7 million, but that’s expected and really not that bad at all for a Sunday. The total domestic opening weekend haul for IM3 was an astounding $175.3 million.
Globally IM3‘s tally was even more impressive with an international take of $504.8 million and worldwide total of $680.1 million. Basically IM3 has already out grossed all of the other Marvel films except The Avengers. This flick is easily going to cross $1 billion dollars worldwide.
In other non-Iron Man box office news…
Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain dropped 62.5 percent to $7.6 for the weekend and a domestic total of $33.9 million dollars. That’s not what we’ve come to expect from a Bay flick, but this isn’t aTransformers film and the budget was only $26 million, so don’t cry for Mr Bay. I’m sure he’ll rebound next year with Transformers 4.
The number three spot goes to writer/director Brian Helgeland’s 42. The baseball film grossed another $6.2 million this week for a drop of 41.7% from last weekend. 42‘s domestic total is at $78.3 million.
Tom Cruise’s Oblivion was at number four with $5.7 million dollars and a drop of 67.4% from last week. Oblivion is now at $75.9 million domestic. Internationally the sci-fi flick is at $146.8 million for a total worldwide gross of $222.7 million.
Coming in at number five we have DreamWorks’ The Croods with a drop of 37.2% from last week and a total of $4.2 million this weekend. The total domestic gross for The Croods is $168.7 million, add in another $349.2 million internationally and you have a total global haul of $517.9 million.
Take a look at the chart below for the rest of the Top Ten.
While you’re at it, let us know what you thought of Iron Man 3.
Personally I liked IM3 a lot. It definitely wasn’t the film I was expecting, but that’s not a bad thing. Without getting spoilery, I think the filmmakers made some character choices some (if not most of you) may not agree with, but I also don’t think it’s the final word on the character from Marvel.
